The story

Khajuraho Dance Festival in Khajuraho

Launched in 1975 during India's official Tourism Year, the Khajuraho Dance Festival stages a week of classical Indian dance in front of the Chitragupta and Vishvanatha temples, part of Khajuraho's Western Group of tenth- and eleventh-century Chandela monuments. Bharatanatyam, Kathak, Odissi, Kuchipudi, Manipuri and Mohiniyattam exponents perform after dark against floodlit carved facades, organized by Madhya Pradesh's Department of Culture with state tourism support.

The Khajuraho Dance Festival began in 1975 as part of India's official Tourism Year, when the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation staged a trial programme of Bundelkhandi dance and music in front of the Kandariya Mahadev temple, the largest of Khajuraho's Western Group shrines.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is its temple-facade stage: dancers perform on a platform set against the floodlit carvings of the Chitragupta and Vishvanatha temples, so the tenth-century stonework itself becomes the backdrop rather than a painted set

02

The mystery stays covered

It began as a modest showcase of local Bundelkhandi forms tied to Kandariya Mahadev temple in 1975 and only became the major pan-Indian classical event it is today after organizers broadened it to invite the country's leading Bharatanatyam, Kathak and Odissi exponents, a shift that took the festival from a struggling regional experiment to one of India's best-known site-specific dance calendars, alongside Konark's comparable festival in Odisha
