The story

Konark Dance Festival in Konark

Every December, classical dancers perform for five nights at the Konark Natya Mandap, an open-air stage built so the thirteenth-century Sun Temple forms the backdrop. Founded in 1986 by Odissi guru Gangadhar Pradhan and run jointly by Odisha Tourism and the Odissi Research Centre, the festival centers Odissi alongside Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak and other classical forms, staged beneath the floodlit stone chariot wheels of the UNESCO-listed temple.

The Konark Dance Festival takes place each December in front of the thirteenth-century Sun Temple at Konark, Odisha, with performances staged at the Konark Natya Mandap, an open-air venue built to frame the temple as a backdrop.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's defining feature is its stage itself: the Konark Natya Mandap is oriented so performers dance with the Sun Temple's carved chariot wheels and stone horses floodlit directly behind them, turning the thirteenth-century monument into a permanent, unchanging backdrop rather than a projected image or set piece

02

The mystery stays covered

The lineup deliberately favors Odissi, the classical dance form associated with Odisha and reconstructed during the mid-twentieth century from temple carvings, palm-leaf manuscripts and surviving oral traditions, though Bharatanatyam, Kuchipudi, Kathak and Manipuri performers also appear across the five nights, drawing soloists and ensembles from leading dance institutions around the country
