Ladakh Festival in Leh

A government-run showcase in Leh built around polo, archery, and monastery mask dances, staged each September to draw visitors into Ladakh's shoulder season. Organized by the tourism department rather than a monastery or temple body, it opens with a procession through Leh market and continues with sporting contests and cultural performances across the town and nearby villages.

Jammu and Kashmir's tourism department launched the Ladakh Festival in 1980 to lengthen a visitor season that otherwise closed once the summer trekking crowds left and the high mountain passes began shutting for winter.
