Nongkrem Dance Festival in Smit

Ka Pomblang Nongkrem is a five-day Khasi harvest-thanksgiving festival held each autumn at Smit, seat of the Khyrim Syiemship near Shillong. Priests and the Syiem perform a ritual sacrifice honoring the deity Ka Blei Synshar, followed by Ka Shad Nongkrem, in which unmarried women dance in silver ornaments and men dance with swords and yak-hair whisks to drum and pipe music.

The Iing Sad, the sprawling thatched residence of the Syiem of Khyrim at Smit, was raised without a single piece of metal in its frame, and it is inside this courtyard that Meghalaya's best-known thanksgiving festival unfolds each autumn.
