Wangala Festival in Tura

The Hundred Drums Wangala Festival has been staged at Asanang village near Tura since 1976, consolidating the Garo tribe's village-level harvest thanksgiving to Misi Saljong, the sun god of fertility, into one public event. Dancers in Dakmanda and Daksari fabric perform in open fields to massed cheng drumming, following an earlier household rite, Ragula, that formally closes each village's harvest season.

Asanang village, roughly 18 kilometers from Tura in Meghalaya's West Garo Hills, has hosted the modern Hundred Drums Wangala Festival since 1976, when Garo cultural organizers gathered scattered village-level harvest rites into a single large public event.
