The story

Jakarta Marathon in Jakarta

Jakarta Marathon launched in 2013 under Indonesia's tourism ministry, drawing growing fields of international runners along a course from the National Monument through Kota Tua and past Istiqlal Mosque. Historically held around October, it offers full marathon and half marathon distances. A separately branded event, later renamed BTN Jakarta International Marathon and run in June, creates some naming ambiguity in current listings.

The original Jakarta Marathon launched in 2013 under Indonesia's tourism ministry, gaining recognition from AIMS and, historically, from what is now World Athletics, and its first edition drew around ten thousand runners, growing to roughly fourteen thousand the following year and around fifteen thousand from fifty-three countries by 2015.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The race's course through Jakarta's colonial-era Kota Tua district, past Fatahillah Square, Jakarta Cathedral, and Istiqlal Mosque, gives runners a route through the city's historic and religious landmarks rather than a generic urban loop

02

The mystery stays covered

Its course records, 2:14:23 for men set by Kenya's Geoffrey Birgen in 2019 and 2:33:54 for women set by Kenya's Sheila Chesang in 2024, reflect a genuinely competitive international field rather than a purely local fun run

03

The city starts moving

A documented naming ambiguity, a separately launched Jakarta Run event later rebranded as the BTN Jakarta International Marathon and shifted to a June date, means runners researching this race should verify which specific event and date they are registering for
