Tenganan Pegringsingan Culture Festival

A June festival in Bali's ancient Bali Aga village of Tenganan Pegringsingan, built around the Usaba Sambah ceremony and its Mekare-Kare Pandan War ritual combat, alongside demonstrations of gringsing, a sacred double-ikat weaving technique found nowhere else in the world, with voluntary donations rather than a fixed entrance fee typically supporting the village's own ongoing preservation efforts.

Young unmarried men in Tenganan Pegringsingan, one of Bali's oldest Bali Aga villages predating the island's Hindu-Majapahit influence, engage in ritual duels each June using bundles of sharp thorny pandan leaves and rattan shields, a practice called Mekare-Kare, or the Pandan War, performed to honor Indra, the god of war, as the ritual peak of a month-long ceremony known as Usaba Sambah.
