Pacu Jalur in Kuantan Singingi
Pacu Jalur races elaborately painted, individually named wooden jalur boats on Riau's Kuantan River, evolving from ordinary seventeenth-century river transport into informal speed contests, then formalized by Dutch colonial administrators from 1890 and run as a structured annual festival since 1905. Now anchored to Indonesian Independence Day in late August, it was recognized as national Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2014.
Villages along the Kuantan River in Rantau Kuantan began using long wooden jalur boats for ordinary river transport as early as the seventeenth century, with informal speed competitions between boats emerging naturally in the eighteenth century as villages compared whose transport boats moved fastest.
