Pesta Danau Toba began sometime in the 1980s among Batak Toba communities around North Sumatra's Lake Toba, rebranded as Festival Danau Toba in 2013 to raise its international profile. Rotating locations among lakeside sites including Samosir Island, it features a mass Tor-Tor dance by hundreds to thousands of performers accompanied by Gondang Sabangunan drums, plus a Solu Bolon traditional dragon-boat rowing competition.

Communities around Lake Toba in North Sumatra began Pesta Danau Toba, or Lake Toba Party, sometime in the 1980s, though sources do not agree on a precise founding year, originally conceived as a community thanksgiving for the lake itself and a way to strengthen ties among the various Batak Toba sub-groups spread across the seven regencies that border the water.
