The story

Lake Toba Festival in Lake Toba

Pesta Danau Toba began sometime in the 1980s among Batak Toba communities around North Sumatra's Lake Toba, rebranded as Festival Danau Toba in 2013 to raise its international profile. Rotating locations among lakeside sites including Samosir Island, it features a mass Tor-Tor dance by hundreds to thousands of performers accompanied by Gondang Sabangunan drums, plus a Solu Bolon traditional dragon-boat rowing competition.

Communities around Lake Toba in North Sumatra began Pesta Danau Toba, or Lake Toba Party, sometime in the 1980s, though sources do not agree on a precise founding year, originally conceived as a community thanksgiving for the lake itself and a way to strengthen ties among the various Batak Toba sub-groups spread across the seven regencies that border the water.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The mass Tor-Tor dance, involving hundreds to thousands of performers in coordinated traditional Batak dress moving to Gondang Sabangunan drum and gong rhythms, is the festival's most visually striking feature, a scale of collective performance distinct from smaller village-level Batak ceremonies

02

The mystery stays covered

Pairing that land-based dance spectacle with a Solu Bolon dragon-boat rowing competition on the lake itself gives the festival both a cultural and a sporting centerpiece under one event

03

The city starts moving

Rotating its location among multiple lakeside sites rather than anchoring to one town reflects its founding purpose as a shared celebration uniting Batak Toba sub-groups across the lake's seven bordering regencies
