Sandeq Festival in Mamuju/Polewali Mandar

Sandeq Race, first held in 1995 to mark Indonesia's fiftieth independence anniversary, races sandeq, narrow outrigger sailing canoes traditionally used by Mandar fishermen, promoted as the fastest traditional sailing craft in the archipelago. Modern editions and the related, longer Sandeq Silumba race run along the West Sulawesi coast between Polewali Mandar, Majene, and Mamuju, finishing at Manakarra Beach, typically in August or September.

Majene sailors together with German anthropologist Horst Liebner organized the first Sandeq Race in 1995, timed to coincide with Indonesia's fiftieth independence anniversary, running an original route of roughly four hundred kilometers between Majene and Makassar.
