Grebeg Sudiro in Surakarta/Solo
A Chinese-Javanese acculturation procession in Solo's Sudiroprajan neighborhood, running since 2007 in the weeks before Chinese Lunar New Year, centered on a gunungan pyramid built from thousands of rice cakes and combining Javanese dance with Chinese lion dance, with the post-procession scramble for distributed rice cakes extending the ritual's participatory element beyond passive spectating.
A pyramid-shaped structure called a gunungan, built from thousands of kue keranjang rice cakes traditionally eaten during Chinese New Year, forms the centerpiece of this Solo procession that began in 2007 as a formalized version of an earlier local custom known as Buk Teko.
