Despite its name, Gilan's Norouzbal fire festival has nothing to do with spring Nowruz: shepherding communities around Amlash light bonfires on mountain peaks in early August to mark a working new year tied to the transhumance calendar of highland herders rather than the nationwide Persian solar new year.

In the Gilaki language, Norouzbal translates roughly to the fire of the new day, and despite the name it falls nowhere near the spring equinox: shepherding communities in Gilan's highlands mark it in early August, around the fourth to eighth of Mordad on the Iranian calendar, with a related observance held mid-July in neighboring Mazandaran.
