On the last Friday of April, roughly a thousand daf players climb onto the stacked rooftops of Palangan, a terraced Kurdistan village outside Kamyaran, to perform the mystic frame-drum gathering known as Hezar Daf, drawing tens of thousands of visitors to a village whose ordinary population is far smaller.
