Tehran Puppet Theater Festival in Tehran
The Tehran International Puppet Theatre Festival gathers puppeteers, marionette companies and shadow-play performers from Iran and abroad for a program of stage shows aimed at both children and adult audiences. Held periodically in the capital, it showcases a performing art form with deep roots in Iranian storytelling traditions such as kheimeh shab bazi, traditional puppet shadow theatre.
Long before Tehran had a dedicated puppet theatre festival, Iranian streets, coffeehouses and wedding courtyards already had their own puppet tradition in kheimeh shab bazi, a folk performance style built around a small stage, glove puppets and marionettes, and a repertoire of stock characters built around a mischievous, often satirical figure known as Pahlevan Kachal.
