The story

Haifa International Children's Theater Festival in Haifa

Founded in 1982 by Haifa Theatre director Noam Semel and municipal culture official Motti Perri, this three-day Passover festival stages theatre built specifically for children rather than repackaged family entertainment. Israeli and international companies perform puppetry, clowning and movement theatre across indoor halls and open-air stages around the Haifa Theatre and Carmel Center, with workshops letting children try stagecraft themselves.

Noam Semel, director of the Haifa Theatre, and Motti Perri, head of the Haifa Municipality's education and culture administration, launched the Haifa International Children's Theater Festival in 1982 to give young audiences work built for them rather than family entertainment repackaged from adult programming.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival has drawn academic study of how children actually respond to what they watch, an unusually formal research angle within ASSITEJ, the international children's theatre network

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than adapting adult repertoire for family audiences, programming is built from the ground up for children, spanning puppetry, clowning and movement theatre chosen for craft over box-office draw

03

The city starts moving

Its continuity comes from institutional backing: the Haifa Theatre, which co-founded the event with the municipality, still anchors it decades later
