The story

Giostra della Quintana Foligno in Foligno

Foligno's Quintana reenacts a specific 1613 Carnival joust among five noble challengers, reorganized in 1946 into a contest among ten historic rioni riding at an effigy called il Moro. Riders spear three rings of shrinking size, eight, six and five centimeters, twice yearly in June and September, with roughly eight hundred participants in Baroque, not medieval, costume.

Foligno's Quintana commemorates a specific historical episode: a joust staged in the city's Piazza Grande on 10 February 1613, during Carnival, when five young nobles nicknamed Cavalier Turco, Cavalier Moro, Cavalier Confidente, Cavalier Saggio and Cavalier Fidele competed to settle a courtly debate over whether a knight finds greater satisfaction in a prince's favor or a lady's.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Foligno dresses its Quintana in seventeenth-century Baroque costume rather than medieval dress, a direct nod to the tournament's documented 1613 origin among five named noble challengers rather than a generalized historical setting

02

The mystery stays covered

Ten rioni, more than the four or six fielded by nearby Arezzo and Ascoli, each pair a single rider with a single horse and compete across three rounds of shrinking rings, five centimeters at the smallest

03

The city starts moving

For two weeks beforehand, each rione runs its own tavern serving period-style seventeenth-century food and staged entertainment
