The story

World Reggae Dance Championship in Kingston

Introduced by the JCDC in 2006, the World Reggae Dance Championship judges dance groups of three to six people across three categories: Roots Reggae, Dancehall and Dance Narrative. International entrants have competed since Japan's team debuted in 2009, with later entries from Australia, France, Poland and Belgium joining Jamaican groups on the same Independence-season stage.

JCDC introduced the World Reggae Dance Championship in 2006 specifically to give reggae and roots-based dance the kind of formal, competitive national platform that Jamaican music itself already had, opening entry to dance groups of three to six people aged eighteen and over from both Jamaica and abroad.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The championship's category structure is its most distinguishing feature, separating historical roots-reggae movement from contemporary dancehall styling and from a staged Dance Narrative category built around storytelling choreography, a three-way split not found in most Caribbean dance contests

02

The mystery stays covered

Its international reach set in early, with Japan's 2009 entry opening the door to later teams from Australia, France, Poland and Belgium travelling specifically to compete in Jamaica

03

The city starts moving

Past champions have used the platform publicly to argue that dancehall and reggae dance are legitimate professions, giving the competition a cultural-advocacy dimension beyond simple prize money
