The story

Jakes Off-Road Triathlon in Treasure Beach

Founded in 1996 by Jakes Hotel chairman Jason Henzell with the BREDS Foundation, this off-road triathlon in Treasure Beach combines a 500-metre ocean swim, 24-kilometre rugged bike leg and 7-kilometre run. Reaching its 30th running in 2026, it draws local and international athletes plus a loyal contingent of former Peace Corps volunteers, doubling as the main annual fundraiser for BREDS community programs.

Jason Henzell, chairman of Jakes Hotel, Villas & Spa, founded the off-road triathlon that bears the property's name in 1996, partnering with the BREDS Foundation to build a race entirely out of the fishing village of Treasure Beach on Jamaica's south coast rather than at a resort strip.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What distinguishes this race from a standard sprint triathlon is its off-road bike leg over Treasure Beach's unpaved farm roads, a technical, rutted course that has helped it earn a reputation as one of the world's toughest short-course triathlons pound for pound

02

The mystery stays covered

Its longstanding tie to former Peace Corps volunteers, who return most years specifically for the race, gives it a reunion atmosphere uncommon among endurance events

03

The city starts moving

Every entry fee and sponsorship dollar funnels directly into BREDS Foundation programs covering local education, sport, heritage and emergency healthcare, making the race inseparable from the district's own social infrastructure
