Saga International Balloon Fiesta in Saga
The Saga International Balloon Fiesta began in 1978 as a small ballooning gathering before relocating to Saga City in 1980 and becoming a full international competition by 1984. Held over about a week each autumn on the plains beside the Kase River, it now draws close to a million spectators to watch dozens of hot air balloons launch, compete, and glow after dark.
What began in 1978 as a modest gathering of five hot air balloons in Amagi, Fukuoka Prefecture, has grown into the Saga International Balloon Fiesta, one of Asia's largest ballooning competitions and the biggest annual event in Saga Prefecture.
