Naga Rocket Festival Bolikhamxay in Bolikhamxay/Mekong
On the full moon closing Buddhist Lent, communities along the Mekong in Bolikhamxay Province, near where the Nam Ngum meets the river and in Pak Ngum District, gather after dark to watch for Naga Rockets, glowing orbs locals attribute to the mythical naga honoring the Buddha. The vigil pairs with the wider Boun Ok Phansa celebrations held across Laos that same night.
Along a stretch of the Mekong in Bolikhamxay Province, where the Nam Ngum River meets the larger waterway near Thaphabath District, and further downstream in Pak Ngum District closer to Vientiane, crowds gather each year on the final night of Buddhist Lent to watch for what locals call Bang Fai Phaya Nak, or Naga Rockets, glowing reddish-orange orbs said to rise silently from the river's surface and drift upward before vanishing without sound, smoke, or trace.
