Khmu Ancestor Ceremony in Khmu villages
At the spiritual heart of Khmu New Year lies Greh, a ritual of ancestor and spirit veneration rooted in the animist belief system Satsana Phi. Elders perform the Nang Keo dance to call ancestral spirits, and a jar of rice wine representing the passing year is opened for elders to drink while the sacred folk song Term Khmu is sung, invoking protection and harvest blessing for the community.
Beneath the visible harvest-festival trappings of Khmu New Year lies Greh, an animist ritual complex focused on ancestor and spirit veneration that many Khmu consider the true core of the celebration.
