Khmu New Year in Luang Prabang/Oudomxay
The Khmu people, one of Laos's largest ethnic groups, mark their new year, called Boun Pod Pi or Boun Kreu, in villages near Luang Prabang and across Oudomxay Province around December to January. A baci blessing ceremony, traditional dance and a striking clay-pot water-carrying performance mark the celebration.
The Khmu, one of the largest ethnic groups in Laos and considered by many in the north to be among the region's earliest inhabitants, mark their own new year with a festival known as Boun Pod Pi or Boun Kreu, sometimes rendered Boun Grur, celebrated in villages close to Luang Prabang and across Oudomxay Province, where Khmu communities form the largest single ethnic group.
