Boun Bang Fai Rocket Festival in Multiple provinces

Boun Bang Fai sends homemade bamboo or metal rockets skyward each May or June to petition Phaya Thaen, the rain god, for rains ahead of rice planting. Judged on height, decoration and performance, the two-to-three-day festival mixes devotion with comic theater, including cross-dressing skits and a custom of dunking a rocket-builder in mud if their launch fails, celebrated widely across Lao provinces.

Boun Bang Fai, the rocket festival, channels an agricultural anxiety into one of the most theatrical celebrations on the Lao calendar: villages across the country build and launch homemade rockets skyward to appeal to Phaya Thaen, the sky deity believed to control rainfall, asking for enough rain to begin the rice-planting season on schedule.
