Rural districts of Savannakhet Province are known for building some of Laos's most elaborate bamboo rockets for Boun Bang Fai, launching them skyward each May to plead with the rain spirit Phaya Thaen ahead of rice planting. Processions, cross-dressing performers and comic courtship games accompany the launches.
