Si Phan Don Festival in Si Phan Don/4000 Islands
Si Phan Don's boat racing festival, Boun Suang Heua, fills the Mekong channels around Don Khong with long dugout racing boats and riverside crowds as Buddhist Lent ends. Village crews paddle in time to onboard drummers while temple ceremonies, candlelit river processions, and food stalls line the banks. Timing follows the lunar calendar, generally around October, making this one of the archipelago's liveliest annual gatherings.
Below the Khone Phapheng rapids where the Mekong splinters into thousands of channels and sandbars, the island communities of Si Phan Don hold Boun Suang Heua, a long-boat racing festival tied to the end of Buddhist Lent (Boun Awk Phansa) on the full moon of the eleventh lunar month.
