Thakhek Boat Racing Festival in Thakhek
Thakhek's Boun Suang Heua brings decorated dugout canoes to the Mekong riverfront below Khammouane's limestone hills, timed to the end of Buddhist Lent around October's full moon. Village crews race in drum-paced heats through the day, and the evening brings a quieter release of candlelit boats onto the current, closing out the province's biggest annual riverside gathering.
Thakhek stages its own edition of Boun Suang Heua on the Mekong River, timed to the end of Buddhist Lent much like the boat races held the same season in Pakse, Savannakhet, and Vientiane, but set against the backdrop of Khammouane province's karst limestone hills rising just inland from the water.
