Boun Lai Heua Fai Vientiane in Vientiane
Vientiane's Mekong riverfront fills with candlelit banana-trunk boats on the full moon marking the end of Buddhist Lent. Families and temples build and float heua fai as offerings to river spirits, asking for luck and washing away misfortune while fireworks and drumming light up Chao Anouvong Park.
Villages along the Vientiane riverfront spend weeks before the festival building heua fai, decorated boats made from banana-tree trunks, bamboo frames, banana leaves, flowers, candles and incense sticks.
