The story

Sansusi Festival in Akniste

Sansusī is a multidisciplinary contemporary-arts festival held since 2014 in the rural setting of Akniste, roughly 150 kilometres from Riga, centred on the Residency Center Suseja. Typically staged the second weekend of August, it packs three days with forest chamber-music concerts, sound installations, contemporary circus and children's performances, with more than 80 artists presenting around 20 different art events each edition.

Most contemporary-arts festivals gravitate toward cities, where audiences, infrastructure and press attention concentrate.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Sansusī's setting is as much a part of its identity as its programme

02

The mystery stays covered

Rather than an urban venue, the festival takes place at the Residency Center Suseja, deep in the rural landscape around Akniste, roughly 150 kilometres south of Riga - close enough to reach for a weekend, far enough to feel genuinely removed from the capital

03

The city starts moving

Chamber-music concerts staged directly among the trees, sound installations placed through the grounds, and contemporary circus performances all share billing with children's shows, giving the festival a family-friendly undertone despite its experimental leanings

04

The water draws everyone in

With over 80 artists presenting roughly 20 distinct events across just three days, the density of programming is unusually high for a festival of its size and remoteness
