The story

Cesis Medieval Festival in Cesis

Cēsis Castle, the best-preserved castle ruins in Latvia and once the most powerful medieval fortress in Livonia, hosts an annual Medieval Festival reenacting daily life from its 800-year history. Knight battle reenactments, period games and crafts, food tastings, and medieval music and dance run alongside costumed castle folk present from May through September, with stalls selling carved instruments, pelts, jewellery and clay pots.

Five hundred years ago, Cēsis Castle was the most powerful fortress in all of Livonia, a stronghold whose walls once dictated the balance of power across a region spanning much of today's Latvia and Estonia.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Cēsis Castle's own history gives its Medieval Festival unusual credibility: five hundred years ago this was the most powerful fortress in all of Livonia, and its ruins today remain the best preserved of any castle in Latvia, with 800 years of history behind them

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival stages knight battle reenactments and period games within the actual ruins where such events once genuinely took place

03

The city starts moving

Costumed castle folk stay present through the warmer months from May to September, not just on a single festival weekend, while craft stalls sell carved instruments, pelts, jewellery and clay pots alongside food tastings and live medieval music and dance, giving visitors a sustained, hands-on sense of pre-modern daily life rather than a brief staged spectacle
