Latvian Song and Dance Celebration in Riga

The Latvian Song and Dance Celebration is Latvia's largest and most significant cultural gathering, held roughly every five years in Riga and inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list. Up to 40,000 choir singers, folk dancers and musicians take part, drawing crowds estimated at half a million people, close to a third of Latvia's population. It descends directly from the nineteenth-century National Awakening and played a central role in the Singing Revolution that helped end Soviet rule.
