Skanu Mezss Festival in Riga

Skaņu Mežs is Riga's festival for experimental and avant-garde sound, held each October since 2003 at venues such as Hanzas Perons. The British magazine The Wire has called it the biggest avant-garde music festival in the Baltic states. Its programme moves between electro-acoustic composition, free improvisation, noise and contemporary composition, with occasional excursions into dance, hip-hop, rock and metal for listeners drawn to music outside the mainstream.

Riga is not the first city that comes to mind when people picture the cutting edge of experimental music, yet since 2003 Skaņu Mežs - Latvian for 'Forest of Sound' - has quietly built exactly that reputation.
