The story

Beirut Marathon in Beirut

Founded in 2003 by May El-Khalil as a project of post-civil-war reconciliation, the Beirut Marathon is Lebanon's flagship long-distance race, a 42.195-kilometer course through central Beirut and its corniche held on the last Sunday of November. It anchors a full weekend that also includes half marathon, 10K, 5K, para-athlete, and children's races organized by the Beirut Marathon Association.

May El-Khalil founded the Beirut Marathon in 2003 while still recovering from a near-fatal road accident that had left her in a coma and required years of surgery to walk again, and she built the race explicitly as a tool for national reconciliation in a country still raw from fifteen years of civil war.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets the full marathon apart from the other Beirut Marathon weekend races is both its distance and its symbolism: the 42

02

The mystery stays covered

kilometer course was designed to cross neighborhoods that once marked civil-war dividing lines, turning the route itself into a statement about coexistence rather than a simple point-to-point course

03

The city starts moving

World Athletics label status gives the race genuine competitive weight, drawing elite international pacers and serious marathoners rather than only recreational participants, while May El-Khalil's own recovery story, from a near-fatal accident to founding one of the region's most recognized road races, remains woven into how the event presents itself each year to runners and spectators alike
