The story

High Altitude Summer Marathon in Mokhotlong

An extreme high-altitude road marathon in Lesotho's remote Mokhotlong district, run through the Maloti Mountains above 3,000 meters since its 2003 founding as the Mokhotlong City Marathon, now offering marathon, half-marathon, 10 kilometer and 5 kilometer distances across steep, thin-air mountain terrain far from Maseru.

The High Altitude Summer Marathon began in 2003 under the more modest name of the Mokhotlong City Marathon, and it has since grown into one of the signature endurance events of Lesotho's remote northeastern highlands, run through the Maloti Mountains at elevations that push past 3,000 meters above sea level.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few marathons anywhere reach the altitude this race sustains, with much of the course above 3,000 meters, making thin air rather than distance the primary obstacle for competitors used to sea-level pacing

02

The mystery stays covered

Mokhotlong's remoteness from Maseru and the rest of Lesotho's tourism circuit gives the event a pilgrimage-like quality for altitude-training runners and endurance specialists who seek it out specifically for its extreme conditions rather than convenience, comfort, or easy access to medical support
