Ghadames International Festival in Ghadames

Every October or November, the mudbrick oasis town of Ghadames in western Libya hosts a three-day festival honoring Tuareg heritage. Now in its 29th edition, the event fills the UNESCO-listed old city with music, dance, poetry recitals and craft displays, drawing visitors into one of the Sahara's best-preserved historic settlements while keeping desert nomadic traditions visible to new generations.

Ghadames has been called the pearl of the desert, and for centuries it earned that name as a caravan crossroads where trade routes from across the Sahara converged before splitting toward the Mediterranean coast, sub-Saharan Africa and the Nile valley.
