Kaunas Jazz in Kaunas
Lithuania's largest international jazz festival, founded in Kaunas in 1991 just after the country's restoration of independence, launched by Jonas Jucas with a small April program at Vytautas Magnus University that has since grown into a year-round calendar of spring, autumn and pre-Christmas concerts drawing musicians from more than twenty countries.
Kaunas Jazz was founded in 1991 on the initiative of Jonas Jucas, arriving barely more than a year after Lithuania had declared its restoration of independence from the Soviet Union, and the festival's first edition carried real symbolic weight as part of a wider cultural reawakening across the newly sovereign country.
