Trauliicht Munshausen in Munshausen

Trauliicht is a traditional Halloween-season and All Saints custom from Luxembourg's Ardennes region, historically built around carved beet lanterns lit to ward off evil spirits and protect livestock near barns. Revived by the Robbesscheier Tourist Centre near Munshausen as 'Trauliicht Weeks' (2024: October 19-November 3, 10am to 5pm daily), the event now includes lantern-making, torch-lit walks, storytelling, songs, costumed characters, and a closing bonfire.

Long before pumpkin carving became the default Halloween-season custom across much of Europe, the Luxembourg Ardennes, the hilly northern region known locally as the Eislek, had its own version of the lit lantern: the beet.
