Fanompoambe in Mahajanga
Fanompoambe is a centuries-old Sakalava royal-relics ceremony held every July at the Doany in Mahajanga, honoring the four kings credited with founding the Sakalava kingdom: Andriamandisoarivo, Andriamisara, Andrianamboniarivo and Andriamihania. Over a week-long observance the relics are ritually bathed in zebu blood within a restricted royal-family area, while the wider public celebrates outside with exhibitions, concerts and processions.
