Mulhako wa Alhomwe Cultural Festival in Chonde
Mulhako wa Alhomwe is the annual cultural festival of Malawi's Lhomwe people, held each October at the cultural association's headquarters in Chonde, Mulanje District. Founded between 2007 and 2008 under the patronage of then-president Bingu wa Mutharika, the festival was created to revive and celebrate Lhomwe language, dance and heritage that organisers say had been historically marginalised within Malawi's wider cultural life.
Each October, the grounds of the Mulhako wa Alhomwe cultural association at Chonde, in Mulanje District, fill with dance troupes, craft stalls and cooking demonstrations as Malawi's Lhomwe people hold their largest annual gathering.
