The story

Mulanje Mountain Porters Race Festival in Mulanje Mountain

The Mulanje Mountain Porters Race is Malawi's best-known trail running event, held annually on the second Saturday of July within the Mount Mulanje Biosphere Reserve. Competitors cover roughly 25 kilometers from the Likhubula Forest Office up to Chambe Plateau, at about 2,500 meters elevation, across Lichenya Plateau, and back down. Founded in 1996 to honor the mountain's working porters and guides, it now draws national and international runners plus thousands of spectators.

Mount Mulanje rises abruptly from the plains of southern Malawi, a granite massif so large and isolated that people in the surrounding Shire Highlands have long called it the island in the sky.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

What sets this race apart from other African trail events is its origin as a tribute rather than a spectacle: British teachers Mike Bradley and a colleague remembered locally as Maryweather started it in 1996 to thank the porters and guides who carry gear and lead hikers up Mount Mulanje, a massif sometimes called the island in the sky

02

The mystery stays covered

The race was originally limited to those working porters and guides before expanding to national and international athletes

03

The city starts moving

Runners cover the roughly 25-kilometer route in around two hours, a distance that takes an ordinary hiker closer to ten hours

04

The water draws everyone in

The event has become Malawi's most prominent extreme sport, producing competitive distance runners and drawing more than 5,000 spectators to Likhubula each July
