The story

Umthetho Cultural Festival in Mzimba

Umthetho Cultural Festival is the annual gathering of Malawi's Ngoni people, held at the foot of Hora Mountain in Mzimba District in the country's Northern Region, typically over a long weekend in late July or early August. Organised by the Mzimba Heritage Association under the patronage of Inkosi ya Makhosi M'mbelwa, paramount chief of the Jere Ngoni, it draws Ngoni communities from Zambia, Tanzania and South Africa as well as Malawi.

At the foot of Hora Mountain in Mzimba District, Malawi's Ngoni people gather each year for Umthetho, a cultural festival organised by the Mzimba Heritage Association under the patronage of Inkosi ya Makhosi M'mbelwa, the paramount chief descended from the Jere Ngoni ruling line.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Umthetho's international reach sets it apart: because the Ngoni migrated across several present-day countries during the nineteenth-century upheavals that followed the rise of the Zulu kingdom, the festival functions as a reunion for a dispersed nation, pulling in Ngoni delegations from Zambia, Tanzania and South Africa alongside Malawian chiefs

02

The mystery stays covered

The 2024 edition, budgeted at nearly seventy-eight million Malawian kwacha and partly corporate-sponsored, was attended by South Africa's Zulu monarch Misuzulu Sinqobile kaZwelithini, one of the most senior Ngoni-related royals in the region, underlining the festival's status as a genuine pan-Ngoni occasion rather than a purely local celebration
