The story

Lake of Stars Malawi Arts Festival in Nkhotakota

The Lake of Stars Festival is a three-day international music and arts event held on the shores of Lake Malawi, founded in 2004 by British visitor Will Jameson after he had volunteered in Malawi in 1998. Now drawing more than four thousand attendees from Malawi, Europe, and across Africa each year, it has been named among Africa's leading music festivals by international media including CNN and Time Out.

The Lake of Stars Festival has grown, over two decades, from a modest gathering of a few hundred people into one of Africa's most internationally celebrated music festivals, all built around the shores of Lake Malawi, the vast body of water that forms the country's most defining geographic feature.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

The festival's growth traces directly back to one person's connection to Malawi: Jameson had volunteered in the country as a student before founding a London club night named Chibuku Shake Shake after a popular Malawian beer, which was voted the United Kingdom's best club night the same year he held the first Lake of Stars edition in 2004 with roughly seven hundred attendees, mostly Malawian

02

The mystery stays covered

The festival is largely staffed by international volunteers bringing UK live-events experience, with many headline acts waiving their usual fees to perform, and it folds charitable and educational programming, including volunteer visits to a local microfinance organization and orphanages, TED-style talks, and youth arts initiatives run by its Malawian production team, directly into the festival experience alongside its music lineup
