Chap Goh Mei Penang in George Town
Chap Goh Mei marks the fifteenth and final day of Chinese New Year, celebrated in George Town with a mass gathering at the Esplanade where unmarried women toss mandarin oranges into the sea in hopes of finding a partner. The evening includes lion and dragon dances, live performances, and fireworks, drawing large crowds each year in February or March depending on the lunar calendar.
Chap Goh Mei closes the fifteen-day Chinese New Year season and is observed across the Chinese diaspora as the Lantern Festival, but nowhere in Malaysia is it marked quite like it is in George Town.
