Hungry Ghost Festival Penang in George Town
The Hungry Ghost Festival, known locally as Zhong Yuan Jie or Phor Tor in Hokkien, is observed throughout the seventh lunar month, usually August, when Penang's Chinese community believes the gates of the underworld open and spirits roam freely. Streets across George Town hold nightly offerings, opera performances, and getai stage shows to appease wandering spirits, alongside communal feasts and charity auctions.
The Hungry Ghost Festival, called Zhong Yuan Jie in Mandarin and Phor Tor among Penang's Hokkien-speaking majority, is one of the most distinctly street-level festivals observed by the island's Chinese community.
