Kelantan Folk Arts Festival

Kelantan promotes its distinctive folk performing arts, including main puteri, a shamanic healing ritual theatre, menora dance drama, wayang kulit shadow puppetry and silat martial arts, through cultural festival programming that has recently included free bus transport aimed at drawing 300,000 visitors to see these traditions performed publicly. Eight Malaysian cultural art forms, several rooted in Kelantanese practice, have gained UNESCO recognition as intangible cultural heritage in this period, reflecting a broader state push to keep these arts visible and actively practiced.

Kelantan sits in the northeastern corner of Peninsular Malaysia, bordered by Thailand and separated from the rest of the peninsula by mountain ranges that historically limited easy overland access, and that relative isolation shaped a Malay culture here distinct enough that Kelantanese Malay, the local dialect, is not readily understood by speakers of standard Malay from elsewhere in the country.
