Keretapi Sarong in Klang Valley and multiple cities
Keretapi Sarong, or Sarong Train, is an annual Malaysia Day community event in which thousands of participants ride commuter trains together while wearing the sarong, or kain pelikat, in a public celebration of the garment as everyday Malaysian dress. The 2025 edition, its ninth, drew roughly 18,000 participants across 11 stations in the Klang Valley and expanded for the first time to Melaka, with organizers including Rapid KL and sponsors such as AirAsia supporting the September 13 event.
The sarong occupies a strange position in modern Malaysian public life: a garment worn comfortably at home by people across the country's Malay, Indian and other communities, yet one that has periodically triggered public controversy when worn outside the home.
