The story

Royal Langkawi International Regatta in Langkawi

The Royal Langkawi International Regatta, dating back to 2003, is an annual sailing competition based at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club in the Andaman Sea, drawing more than 40 yachts each year to race against a backdrop of limestone cliffs and tropical islands. The 22nd edition concluded January 24, 2026 after a week of racing, with skipper Rolf Heemskerk's The Next Factor winning the Prime Minister's Challenge Trophy ahead of runner-up Alive and third-placed Blitz.

Langkawi, an archipelago of limestone islands off Malaysia's northwest coast known internationally for its beaches, cable car and duty-free shopping, has also built a significant reputation within competitive sailing through the Royal Langkawi International Regatta, based at the Royal Langkawi Yacht Club.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Racing against Langkawi's dramatic limestone karst scenery gives this regatta a visually distinctive setting compared to many other Southeast Asian sailing events, combining competitive offshore and harbour racing with genuinely striking natural landscape

02

The mystery stays covered

Its more than two-decade history since 2003 has built a community of returning competitors, described by organizers as loyal patrons cherishing memories since the regatta's founding, alongside a steady influx of new sailors each year

03

The city starts moving

The Prime Minister's Challenge Trophy as the marquee prize gives the event a level of national prestige beyond a typical club regatta, connecting it to Malaysia's highest levels of government recognition for sailing
