Kaamatan Festival in Penampang
Kaamatan is the Kadazan-Dusun harvest festival celebrated on May 30 and 31 across Sabah, centered in Penampang district at the Hongkod Koisaan hall, honoring the legend of Huminodun, a maiden who sacrificed herself to save her community from famine and whose body became the first rice crop. First gazetted as an official public holiday in 1960, the festival features the Unduk Ngadau beauty pageant, Sumazau dance performances and the Sugandoi singing competition.
According to Kadazan-Dusun belief, in the earliest days of the world, humanity faced a severe famine.
