The story

Penang Bridge International Marathon in Penang Bridge

The Penang Bridge International Marathon traces its roots to 1982, when it began as a road race from the Esplanade to Gurney Drive, later moving onto the Penang Bridge itself in 1986 shortly after the bridge opened. Rebranded and revived in 2006 as a combination of two earlier race traditions, the marathon relocated from 2024 to Batu Kawan, now running across the newer Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah Bridge with ASPEN Vision City as its start and finish point.

The Penang Bridge International Marathon's history stretches back to 1982, when the event began not as a bridge race at all but as a road race between the Esplanade and Gurney Drive, then known simply as the Penang International Marathon.

What is special

The part that makes it specific.

01

The place changes

Few marathons in the world run across a major sea-crossing bridge for a significant portion of their course, and the Penang Bridge marathon's history of using the island's iconic bridge infrastructure since 1986 has given it a distinctive identity built around a recognizable engineering landmark

02

The mystery stays covered

The event's evolution, from an early-1980s Esplanade-to-Gurney Drive race through 'Asian Challenge' rebranding in 2020 to its 2024 relocation onto the newer second Penang bridge, reflects a marathon that has continuously adapted its course and identity across more than four decades

03

The city starts moving

Drawing runners from more than 70 countries in recent editions, the marathon has grown into one of the largest mass-participation sporting events in Malaysia, reflecting sustained international interest in racing across Penang's bridge infrastructure
