Penang Hill Festival in Penang Hill
The Penang Hill Festival is an annual event held each July at Penang Hill, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and former British colonial hill retreat overlooking George Town, combining biodiversity and heritage programming with cultural performances and music. Now in its fifth-plus edition since launching around 2019 or 2020, the festival showcases the hill's ecological significance alongside its layered colonial and local history, accessible via the historic Penang Hill funicular railway.
Long before it became a UNESCO-recognized biosphere reserve, Penang Hill served a simple, practical purpose for British colonial administrators: escape from the tropical heat of George Town below.
