Bon Odori Shah Alam in Shah Alam
Bon Odori is an annual Japanese cultural festival held in Malaysia since 1977, historically centered at the Shah Alam National Sports Complex, drawing tens of thousands for traditional Bon dance, taiko drumming, and Japanese food stalls. Originally organized so Japanese expatriate families could pass on their heritage to children abroad, the festival has grown into a large multi-ethnic gathering supported by the Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur, the Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur, and the Embassy of Japan.
Bon Odori's presence in Malaysia dates to 1977, when the Japanese expatriate community, supported by the Japan Club of Kuala Lumpur, the Japanese School of Kuala Lumpur, and the Embassy of Japan, began organizing the festival as a way for Japanese families living abroad to pass their summer Obon traditions on to their children.
